Spring 2011 has brought about new exciting trends ranging from the masculine, ‘We Wear the Pants’ look, to psychedelic clashing prints and to a new hemline. As Brisbane is catching up to the trends from the runway, I have captured some photographs of these trends in action.
We Wear the Pants
24th March 2011 - Kelvin Grove, Brisbane
Tailored trousers and collared blouses is a dominant trend for Spring 2011. This trend allows you to express your inner boy while a touch of femininity still remains. Particular elements of the trend seem to have been adapted from last spring’s ‘Matching Orders’, sourced from Style.com, which involved the military influence of trousers and blazers. The trend is best worn in earthy tones such as black, grey, navy, brown and khaki. Captured in Brisbane, the photograph above involves this trend that has been influenced from the runway and taken to the street and worn in the form of grey, tight jeans, a burgundy collared blouse and a scarf tied around the neck. Rather than the masculine tie, the scarf allows that extra touch of femininity. As shown in Style.com, designers such as Celine, J. Crew and Pringle of Scotland have taken this trend aboard in their Spring 2011 collections.
Clashing Prints
There is no time for boring with this Spring’s clashing prints and mismatching pieces.
From flora and fauna to polka dots and Swedish artworks, prints were all the go in Spring 2010 collections belonging to designers such as Blumarine and Moschino. As indicated in Style.com, this striking trend seems to have sparkled from Spring 2010’s ‘Pattern Play’ which involved lots of florals and luminous mix matching from head to toe, though this time it is has been taken to a whole new level. In this photograph, this eccentric trend has been adopted through the arrangement of a polka dot top, clashed with checkered long trousers and complimented by a radiant, colourful handbag.
The New Hemline
Mid-calf is this Spring 2011’s brand new hemline. The return of modesty and femininity has hit this season’s runway with three quarter length skirts as suggested in Style.com and Harper’s Bazaar. They have been playing with hemlines forever, and longer hemlines were emerging for Autumn/Winter 2010 with skirts appearing as knee length, tulip and even maxi. Perhaps this is where the mid-calf trend is stemming from. It seems designers such as Chloe, Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney and many others feel it is time for something new again thus the introduction of our new skirt length. Influenced from the runway, the new hemline trend is now appearing on the streets of Brisbane, and as shown below, although the skirt is skimming just above mid-calf, it is clear where the objective lies.
